What Can Be Laser Engraved? A Material-by-Material Guide from Our Shop

We get some version of this question on nearly every custom quote: "can you engrave X?" The honest answer depends on the material, not the object. Once you know how laser engraving behaves on a handful of base materials, you can guess pretty accurately whether almost anything will work.
What "laser engraved" actually means here
Our engraving is monochrome, always. There are two outcomes, depending on the material: a silver-frost mark on glass, slate, and glass plaques, or a dark burn mark on wood and leather. Either way, the laser is cutting into the surface of the material, not printing or painting on top of it. That is why the engraving does not peel, fade, or wash off — there is nothing sitting on the surface to come loose. It also means we are not doing full-color photo reproduction. A photo engraved on slate looks like a detailed monochrome image, not a printed photograph, and we will proof it with you before anything is cut so there are no surprises.
Glass
Glass engraves in silver-frost — a bright, permanent etched line against the glass. This is what we use for whiskey glasses and glass plaques. Our 6x8 glass plaque uses quarter-inch black glass specifically because the contrast makes the silver-frost engraving pop. Slate
Slate is one of our favorite materials because it takes detail well and looks intentional rather than crafty. It engraves in the same silver-frost finish as glass. Our slate coasters are the most common product, but slate also works well for photo engravings on a larger custom piece — a range day photo, a deployment shot, a unit formation — ordered through our custom quote page.
Wood
Wood engraves with a dark burn, which reads as a rich brown-to-black mark depending on the wood species. This is the material behind our acacia cutting board and bamboo serving board. Beyond kitchenware, we take custom orders on other wood items — guitar bodies, cornhole boards, rolling pins, watch boxes, and hammer handles among them. If it is solid wood and fits in a shipping box, it is worth asking about.
Leather and leatherette
Leather and leatherette both take a dark burn similar to wood, though the finish reads slightly different depending on the material's grain and dye. Our leatherette patches are the most affordable engraved item in the shop, made to heat-press onto hats and bags you already have. We also engrave full leather journals as a custom order — a common request for retirement gifts.
Metal and customer-supplied items
Metal engraving is where "it depends" applies most. We engrave customer-supplied YETI and Stanley tumblers — send us the tumbler, we engrave it, and send it back. On a powder-coated tumbler the laser removes the coating to expose the stainless underneath, so the mark shows as clean silver. Ammo cans and knives are two more metal items we take on as custom jobs; the finish and legibility depend on the specific coating or blade finish, which is exactly why these go through our quote process instead of a fixed catalog listing. If you have a specific metal item in mind, describe it in your quote request and we will tell you honestly whether it is a good fit before you order.
What we do not do
A few honest limits: we do not do full-color printing of any kind — every finish is monochrome, silver-frost or dark burn, no exceptions. We do not skip the proof step on custom work; nothing gets engraved until you approve the layout, because a laser mark cannot be undone. And we are not a walk-in shop — we are based in Watertown, NY, near Fort Drum, and pickup is by appointment only; everything else ships.
